First day in student housing: What to do?

You have just shifted to a new city, a new place and a new house that you can now call your home away from home! What did you do on the first day? How do you settle in? What are the most important things to tick-mark when you have just moved into a new house? Settling into a new place can take a couple of days, so don't worry; take your time and turn your house into a warm home! All these questions are very normal to ask, which is why this article will give you all the answers!

Check the logistics: water, electricity, geysers, lights.

Let's say you have moved into student accommodation in Bristol; the first thing when you move into new housing is to check all the essential operational items like -
  • Whether or not the water purifier is working
  • When does the electricity cycle begin, and you can mark the due dates.
  • In case there are geysers, and you need to use them, then you need to check whether they are in working condition.
  • Lights are another essential thing to check. Make sure you go through each switch to see if the lights are in working condition; if some aren't working, then note down the problems so you or your landlord can fix them.
These are the necessities of a house. Once you have checked everything, make a list of the things that require repair or change or need to be put together. You can then discuss this with your landlord and take further action.

Set up the kitchen

Another thing that is important to check in on the first initial days of your moving into a new house is the kitchen. The kitchen is the engine of the house; that is where all your food will be made, and that is where all your energy is coming from! So the kitchen is an essential part of the house that requires good attention. So what all should you check in the kitchen?
  • Make sure you have a working fridge
  • Figure out whether there is a gas connection or not or if you need a cylinder
  • If there is an oven and dishwasher, test them to see their condition
  • If there is a washing machine, then go ahead and give that a check
  • Make a list of items you need for the kitchen say cutlery, holders, napkins, dishes, boxes etc

Any furniture/household items you need?

The next thing to look at is if there is any big item/furniture that you wish to get for the house. For example, you would sometimes want to get things like a table, a folding chair, side tables, etc., to make the house more functional. So go ahead and assess your home and the space, and you can accordingly see what you want and need and what can fit in the space you have. Again, this doesn't necessarily have to be done on the first day and can take a couple of days until you figure it out, so it's no problem taking your time!

This should be enough for you to get a good idea about everything that needs to be done with setting up the house on the first day. Below are some things you can do in the initial phase of moving into a new home.

Set up your room

For example, say if you move into a student studio in Coventry, you will have the whole accommodation to set up! Go big, go creative; it's your space; make it your own. Setting up your room can take a while, so don't fret if it doesn't happen immediately; you can take a while to figure out what suits you and is not!

Get to know your neighbours

When you move into a new place, you must know the people you are living around you! Especially as a student, knowing people living in your vicinity can be of great help while settling into a new environment. So go ahead, knock on their doors, and maybe take something sweet for them as a gesture.

Explore your neighbourhood

This is something you should do without fail. Go around your area, discover new places to eat, to buy your groceries and other items. This will help you understand your surroundings better and make you feel like a part of your area. Talk to the locals, shop vendors and find out more about the places you can visit locally!
